Against that, the official face value is €21 ($23.95) for Neuschwanstein plus a €2.50 ($2.85) online fee, and Linderhof is €11 ($12.54), so the difference over face value is the operator's reservation service: a guaranteed slot that fits the coach timetable. Up the hill, the shuttle bus costs €3.50 ($3.99) up or €5.00 ($5.70) round trip, or a horse carriage about €8 ($9.12) up in season, if you do not want the 30-40 minute walk.

Out of Munich to Linderhof

You board a central Munich meeting point in the morning, one of two meeting points depending on your option, and ride about 2 hours in the air-conditioned coach while the guide covers the story of Ludwig II, the so-called Fairy-Tale King. Linderhof Palace is the first destination, about 97 km from Munich. It is the only one of Ludwig's palaces completed in his lifetime, and the guided castle tour inside lasts about 1 hour, with time in the grounds depending on the season.

Note that the late-departure option skips Linderhof altogether, which changes the character of the whole day.

Past Oberammergau to Hohenschwangau

From Linderhof the coach continues through the Ammergau Alps and passes Oberammergau, famous for its Passion Play and painted façades. There is no stop here: you see the village through the bus window, roughly 20 minutes of driving. The ride on to Hohenschwangau takes about 45 minutes, covering the 44.9 km between Linderhof and the village.

About 2 Hours in Hohenschwangau

You arrive around midday and get about 2 hours in the village for lunch at your own expense, the shops and photos of the Alpine setting. This is also when you go up to Neuschwanstein. The walk from the ticket center is about 1.5 km uphill, 30 to 40 minutes, or the shuttle bus and carriage run for a fee in season.

The guided tour of the castle interior lasts about 30 minutes, through the finished rooms only, with many steps inside and no photography. Weather and access permitting, you also get the Marienbrücke, the iron bridge of 1866 behind the castle with the classic view. Hohenschwangau Castle itself is not entered on this tour, only seen from outside.

Back to Munich

The drive back budgets about 2 hours, and you reach Munich in the evening, about 10 hours after departure. The honest arithmetic: roughly 4 hours of the day are spent on the coach for a castle interior visit of about 30 minutes. That is the trade-off for fitting two palaces into one day at $86.

Fitness and Access

From the ticket center the climb to the castle is about 1.5 km on a steep road, 30 to 40 minutes on foot, and there are many steps inside the castle, over 300 by the palace administration's count.

The shuttle bus and horse carriage soften the climb in season for a fee, but both stop in snow and ice, and the interior stairs are unavoidable. Travellers Who Want the Second Castle or a Slow Afternoon

Hohenschwangau Castle, Ludwig's childhood home below Neuschwanstein, is not entered on this tour, so if the interior of that castle matters to you, the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau day includes guided tours of both castles. And because Linderhof takes the morning, you get about 2 hours around Neuschwanstein rather than a full afternoon. If you would rather skip the second palace and linger, the late start tour from the same operator leaves at 9:30 AM and stays in Hohenschwangau all day.
